People don't follow you because of what you know. They follow you because they feel like you actually see them.
Welcome back to our series on John Maxwell's 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. Law #10 is the Law of Connection, and it might be the most important one yet: leaders touch a heart before they ever ask for a hand.
In this episode, John breaks down why so many leaders want loyalty without ever building the relationship that earns it, and I bring it home with what connection actually looks like when you're leading your team, your family, or yourself.
Here's what you'll gain from this episode:
Understand the Real Root of Resistance: Learn why most pushback from your people isn't really about direction, but disconnection, and what to do about it.
The Locomotive Principle: John's unforgettable story about trains, and why hitting people with your vision is not the same as connecting with them.
Know Yourself Before You Try to Know Anyone Else: Discover why leaders who haven't connected with themselves internally will never connect with anyone externally.
The Nine Ways to Connect: John's practical, step by step list for building real relational trust with the people you lead.
The Herb Kelleher Story: A classic example of the Law of Connection in action, and what 16,000 employees said about the leader who made every one of them feel known.
I've led enough people to know that the ones who stay with you aren't staying for your strategy. They're staying because you saw them first. This one will change how you walk into every room you lead.

This episode is different for me. My guest was my best friend when we were ten years old, inseparable, running track together at six in the morning, trading baseball cards, growing up right alongside each other. Then life happened, and thirty five years went by without us being in the same room. After all that time, we finally sat down together, and today I brought him on the show.
Greg Genske went from that kid in my backyard to one of the top sports agents alive, building an agency with Gary Vaynerchuk, teaching negotiation at Berkeley Law, and representing thousands of professional athletes through the biggest deals of their careers.
Here's what you'll gain from this episode:
The Negotiation Secret Nobody Teaches: Greg breaks down the psychology of negotiation and why immaculate preparation on the other person's position beats any tactic.
The Tom Brady Story You've Never Heard: How a single deposition Greg took as a trial lawyer helped open the door for the greatest quarterback in history.
Position Yourself as the Expert: Why the people who separate themselves in any industry teach instead of sell.
Elimination, Not Addition: Greg's decision to give up alcohol after nine years of winning in spite of it, and what he found on the other side.
What 3,000 Athletes Taught Him About Loyalty: The difference between being an agent and being a real partner.
If you've got a friend from your childhood you've lost touch with, this one is your sign to reach out today. Some relationships are worth thirty five years of silence and still worth fighting for.

Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices - Your cup is empty, and you've been calling it love.
I get a version of this question all the time: who's supposed to be the number one priority in your life? And this week I gave you an answer most of you don't want to hear. Because the version of people-pleasing nobody warns you about isn't the one where you're afraid to say no to a stranger.
It's the one where you've spent years putting everyone you love ahead of yourself, until there's nothing left in the cup to pour.
This one's built around some of the conversations that shaped how I think about this, with Tony Robbins, Jay Shetty, and Rob Dyrdek. Not soundbites. Real, lived-in wisdom from three guys who've actually done the work on themselves. Here's what you'll gain from this episode:
The stake in the ground: Why you keep telling yourself you can't move, even when you could walk away in a second.
Tony's rock bottom story: What he did the night he had nothing left, and how it rewired the rest of his life.
The three date rule: A simple set of questions Jay Shetty says can reconnect you with someone you think you already know completely.
The million hour mindset: How Rob Dyrdek thinks about time that makes every single day feel different.
Your own worst enemy: Why the way you talk to yourself is training the universe how to treat you, and the one phrase that flips it.
Time is not unlimited, and neither is your patience with yourself. You have been the last person on your own list for too long. Fill your cup first. Not because it's selfish. Because it's the only way you have anything left to give the people you love.

If you're not happy with the people around you, the most important question you can ask is not "why do I keep attracting this?" It's "what about me is drawing it in?"
Law #9 of John Maxwell's 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership is the Law of Magnetism, and it is one of the most confronting laws in this entire series. The principle is simple: who you are is who you attract. Leaders don't attract who they want. They attract who they are. Your values, your energy, your standards, your character — all of it creates a magnet that pulls toward you the people who reflect it back.
John opens this episode with an exercise that will stop you cold. He asks you to write down the three qualities you most want in the people around you. And then he asks the only question that matters: do you actually possess those qualities yourself?
I connect this law to something I've written about in both Max Out Your Life and The Power of One More: your internal thermostat. Most people are running their teams, their businesses, and their lives at whatever temperature they believe they deserve. And when results start to exceed that setting, they subconsciously cool things back down. This law is about raising that thermostat because when you raise your own standard, the quality of people who stay in your world begins to change too.
Here's what you'll gain from this episode:
The Mirror Exercise: John's opening exercise that forces you to look honestly at what you're actually bringing before you make another hire or point the finger at your team.
The Six Areas of Magnetism: The specific dimensions where like attracts like, and how to use each one to understand exactly what your leadership is currently pulling in.
Your Life Is Recruiting: Why your leadership is drawing something toward you right now whether you realize it or not, and the one question that changes everything.
The Identity Thermostat: My framework for understanding why most leaders keep attracting the same people at the same level, and what it takes to permanently raise the standard.
High Standard Attracts High Standard: The practical rep this week: evaluate your team, your inner circle, and your culture at home, and ask honestly what your leadership has been modeling.
This is one of those laws that stays with you long after the episode ends. The people you are surrounded by right now are telling you something. The question is whether you're willing to hear it. Go watch this episode and then do the exercise John walks you through. I promise it will reveal something worth knowing.
This series releases every Thursday and each law builds on the last. If you haven't grabbed the free workbook yet, click the link below. It's the only way to track your progress law by law and get your questions in front of John and me for the upcoming live Q&A sessions.
Max out.

Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices - He started with a paper route. Now he runs America's largest personal injury law firm, spends $600 million a year on advertising, and owns OJ Simpson's Bronco. John Morgan doesn't just understand luck. He's spent his entire life engineering it.
John is the founder and chairman of Morgan & Morgan, the firm that has recovered more than $30 billion for its clients and built one of the most recognizable brands in the country. This interview is a masterclass in how the most successful people in the world create conditions for things to go right, and what most people get completely wrong about the role of chance in their success.
John brings one of the most unfiltered, fearless, and genuinely wise business minds I've ever sat across from. He breaks down the three types of luck and why two of them are entirely in your control.
He talks about moonshots and bullets, about what the stagecoach companies got wrong about the train, and about why the best stock market you'll ever invest in is the one you're building yourself. He also gives a jaw-dropping answer about whether all of this is worth it.
Here's what you'll gain from this episode:
The Three Types of Luck: And why you'll never look at someone's "lucky break" the same way again.
Bullets Before Bombs: The framework John uses to decide when to go all in and when to stay patient, and why most businesses fail before they ever get there.
The Best Stock Market You'll Ever Invest In: This the most profound thing said in nearly 900 episodes. You'll understand why when you hear it.
You Can't Teach Hungry: The one trait that separates the people who make it from everyone else, and how to spot it in minutes.
The Stagecoach and the Train: An urgent warning for every business owner right now, and what to do about it.
I push John on things people are afraid to ask someone of his stature: whether entrepreneurs are born or made, how AI is actually hitting his businesses right now, and what he thinks about the hunger you either have or you don't.
John Morgan is the real deal. Go get his book Life is Luck and go listen to this episode. I think it's one of the most in-depth conversations I've had on this show in a long time.
