Earth Charter Podcast: Turning Conscience Into Action

What if the law did not see Nature simply as something we own, use, or protect, but recognized Earth as a living community with rights of its own? What would change if rivers, forests, ecosystems, and the living world were not merely objects of human concern, but subjects deserving respect and protection? 
In this conversation, with South African environmental lawyer and author, Cormac Cullinan, we explore the evolution and impact of the Rights of Nature movement, the significance of the 2010 Universal Declaration of the Rights of Mother Earth, and the possibilities for transforming both our legal systems and our relationship with the natural world. Cullinan reflects on the influence of the Universal Declaration and the experimental and restorative role of the International Rights of Nature Tribunal. He shares insights from place-based initiatives involving Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa, and Antarctica, illustrating how the recognition of Nature’s rights can take different forms in different contexts. The conversation also explores the deeper ethical foundations of Earth jurisprudence and its connections with the Earth Charter, particularly its recognition that humanity is part of a larger community of life. Cullinan explains why the language of harmonious coexistence with Nature matters and why transforming our legal systems is essential if societies are to respect and sustain the health and integrity of the Earth community. The conversation closes with a call for education, collaboration and the emergence of a broad movement of people whose primary allegiance is to our shared living planet.

In this conversation, Earth Charter International Executive Director Mirian Vilela speaks with author, and Rights of Nature advocate Jessica den Outer about the movement’s evolution and its connection to the Earth Charter. Den Outer explains how recognizing rivers, forests, oceans, and other ecosystems as subjects of rights can help legal systems move beyond treating nature merely as property. Drawing on cases from New Zealand, Ecuador, Spain, India, and the Netherlands, she presents Rights of Nature not as a “silver bullet,” but as a pragmatic legal bridge toward a worldview grounded in care, reciprocity, responsibility, and respect for the community of life. The conversation also explores the influence of Indigenous worldviews, the role of guardians who speak on behalf of ecosystems, and the many ways citizens, educators, businesses, lawyers, artists, and communities can help translate ethical principles into action.

In this episode, Michael Peters discusses the concept of ecological civilization as a transformative response to today's planetary challenges. Drawing on more than twenty-five years of experience living and working in China, he reflects on the cultural and philosophical foundations that inspired the Handbook of Ecological Civilization, which he co-edited with leading Chinese scholars. The conversation explores how ecological civilization offers a framework for rethinking humanity's relationship with the natural world, the importance of cross-cultural perspectives in sustainability, and the critical role of education in fostering ecological responsibility. Peters also shares insights from his book Moral Education and the Ethics of Self-Cultivation: Chinese and Western Perspectives, highlighting how moral education can help cultivate the values and ethical commitments needed to build a more just, sustainable, and interconnected future.

Julia shares the origins of Gross National Happiness (GNH) in Bhutan and how its origins in the 1970’s has impacted the development of Bhutan and shaped its policies and culture. By putting the happiness and well-being of all people and all life at the center of development and growth, there are noticeable differences in the way Bhutanese citizens care for each other, how their children speak of their futures, and how citizens hold their government accountable.
The inclusion of all life in the measure of happiness extends to policies that curb emissions, protect forests, and limit the impacts of tourism. Julia also discusses the role of music in the development of culture and nurturing our well-being, relating improvisation to the ways in which we should approach envisioning the future. 

She delved into the idea of awareness and inner well-being and shares four dimensions of well-being Awareness, Connection, Insight and Purpose. She concludes by sharing a message of hope and resilience as humanity works towards an ecocivilization, recognizing that change is difficult and takes time but requires trust that change may be occurring in ways we cannot easily measure.
