The Candid Frame: Conversations on Photography

Gregory Constantine is an American-Canadian documentary photojournalist, author, and visual storyteller whose career has been dedicated to long-term, independent projects exploring human rights, inequality, citizenship, identity, genocide, and the power of the state. Through patient, in-depth visual storytelling, Greg documents communities whose experiences are often overlooked, revealing the human consequences of discrimination, displacement, and government policies. His award-winning projects include Nowhere People, Exiled To Nowhere: Burma's Rohingya, Kenya's Nubians, and Ek Khaale: Once Upon A Time. He is the author of three photography books, and his work has been exhibited in more than forty cities around the world. For years, Greg has also documented immigration detention systems in multiple countries through Seven Doors, examining the impact of detention on migrants, asylum seekers, refugees, and their families. His work demonstrates the power of long-term documentary photography to make complex political and social issues personal, visible, and impossible to ignore. His most recent work on the personal and societal impact of US immigration policy is currently published in Mother Jones magazine. When photographer Gerald Cyrus began photographing New York City in the 1990s, he was drawn to the streets of Harlem, its neighborhoods, its people, and the vibrant music scene that filled its clubs and lounges. Over the course of a decade, he created a remarkable body of black-and-white photographs that capture everyday life with an intimacy and sense of connection that goes well beyond traditional documentary photography. Cyrus's photographs are attentive to the people who give a place its character, finding beauty and energy in moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. Those photographs are now collected in his new monograph, Uptown Odyssey, published by TBW Books. The book brings together images made during the 1990s, moving from Harlem's streets and subway platforms to the jazz clubs and nighttime spaces where music and community came together. Many of the subway photographs had remained unseen for more than three decades. For Cyrus, the book represents the culmination of a body of work that has remained deeply personal while also providing an important record of Black life in New York during a transformative period. When artist and photographer Emilia Martin began exploring the stories passed down through her Polish family, she became increasingly interested in the ways history is constructed, preserved, and forgotten. Working across photography, writing, sound, and sculpture, Emilia uses multiple forms of artistic expression to explore the relationship between memory, heritage, and the stories we inherit. Growing up between her grandmother's remote farm in rural eastern Poland and the industrial coal-mining region of Silesia, Emilia experienced two very different relationships to land, labor, history, and belonging. Those contrasting environments became a foundation for her artistic practice, which draws on oral histories, myths, rituals, and objects as forms of archives and systems of knowledge. Her work also embraces absence—those fragments of cultural history that have been dismissed, forgotten, or lost—and asks what might emerge when we acknowledge that some stories can never be fully recovered. Rather than limiting herself to a single medium, Emilia allows the ideas she wants to explore and communicate to determine how she makes the work, moving freely between photography, writing, sound, and sculpture. The images became the foundation for The Anonymous Project, an evolving collection that explores the memories, relationships, and everyday moments preserved in photographs whose original subjects and stories have been lost. What began as a fascination with found photographs has grown into a much larger exploration of photography, memory, and the stories we attach to images. That interest in photography has carried throughout Shulman's work, whether through The Anonymous Project or through collaborations with photographers including Martin Parr and Omar Victor Diop. He also produced and directed I Am Martin Parr, a film exploring the life and work of the British photographer. Across these projects, Shulman approaches photography from different perspectives—as a collector, collaborator, filmmaker, and storyteller—while continually asking what photographs reveal about the people who made them, the people they depict, and the cultures in which they were created. When photographer Bill Wishner began his career more than three decades ago, his focus was music—particularly jazz. His photographs documented performances and musicians, eventually leading to his role as co-editor of Monterey Jazz Festival: 40 Legendary Years. Over time, however, his photographic interests shifted from the stage to the urban environment, where he began looking for the unexpected images hidden in the walls and surfaces of cities around the world. Beginning in 2012, Bill embraced the role of what he calls a "Visual Hunter," turning his attention to the transformative visual art and aesthetics found on urban walls. His Art of the City Wall project explores the layers, textures, shapes, and juxtapositions created by graffiti, posters, weathering, and the passage of time. Rather than simply documenting what he finds, Bill uses framing and observation to transform these fragments of the urban landscape into photographs that invite us to see familiar environments in entirely new ways. His books Artifacts and De-Faced extend this exploration, while his longtime commitment to photography also includes founding f8 Pasadena Salon and co-directing Pasadena Photography Arts, organizations dedicated to fostering dialogue, education, and opportunities for photographers.
