In February 2025, in a quiet corner of west Georgia, a married couple was shot to death in their bed as they slept. There was no forced entry, and the killer took the weapon with them. For five months the case looked like an unsolved tragedy —and the grieving teenage daughter who called 911 became one of its most public mourners, posting tribute after tribute online and begging the internet to care. Then the sheriff’s office named her as the person accused of pulling thetrigger.
This week on Deadly Intent, we sit with a case that is still unfolding — and one that could not be more suited to this show, because its entire weight rests on a single unanswered question: what was really happening inside the mind of the girl in those videos? Was that grief, or was it performance? We trace the case in order — from the family behind the door, through the morning everything shattered,into five strange months of public mourning, and on to an arrest, an indictment, and a trial that keeps slipping out of reach.
Along the way we hold the hardest tension in true crime: that Sarah Grace Patrick has pleaded not guilty and has never been tried, and that everything the state alleges still has to be proven. It was supposed to be one of the good days. A district track meet in Frisco, Texas. Hundreds of high schoolers. An ordinary spring Wednesday.
Then a thunderstorm rolled in, and everyone scrambled for cover under the pop-up tents. Under one of them — a tent belonging to a school he didn't attend — seventeen-year-old Karmelo Anthony took shelter from the rain. Within about aminute, a dispute over who got to stand under that canopy ended with another seventeen-year-old, Austin Metcalf, bleeding to death in the arms of his twin brother.
There was no whodunit. Anthony admitted from the very first that he used the knife. The question that consumed a courtroom — and a country — for the next fourteenmonths was something far harder: was this a frightened young man defending himself in a moment of chaos? Or was it murder?
In this episode, we leave the national noise at the door and look at what the jury actually heard — the words spoken before anyone touched anyone, the order of events that may have decided everything, and the razor-thin legal line between fear and intent. Then we turn and examine the noise itself, because the way this case got swallowed by the internet is its own kind of psychology worth understanding.
Same knife. Same wound. Same dead boy. And the entire spectrum from innocent to murderer turning on a state of mind no camera ever recorded.

At 5:30 on a July morning in Strongsville, Ohio, a silver Camry accelerated down an empty suburban road to nearly 100 miles an hour, held a dead-straight line for three-quarters of a mile, and drove head-on into a brick wall. Two young mendied. The seventeen-year-old girl behind the wheel survived — and what investigators pulled from the car's black box turned a tragedy into a homicide case.
 
The accelerator was floored. The brake was never touched. And two weeks earlier, Mackenzie Shirilla had allegedly threatened to crash the car with her boyfriendinside it.
 
This week, we walk the whole length of that road: the silent testimony of the event data recorder, the security footage a judge said she could never un-see, the toxic relationship the state built its motive on, and the medical defense thatcouldn't find its expert. A court called it murder — "the mission was death." But behind the verdict sits a locked room none of us can enter: what a teenage girl truly meant in the last few seconds before impact.
