Who Killed 2Pac? | The Murder of Tupac Shakur

When LAPD detectives sat down with Duane "Keffe D" Davis in December 2008, they were investigating the murder of Notorious B.I.G. They had built a drug case to pressure Davis into cooperating. He was a person of interest in Biggie's killing because he drove an Impala matching the shooter's car and because he'd been at the party Biggie left minutes before being gunned down.
Davis denied any role in Biggie's death. Then, according to the detective who testified at his trial, he said four words that changed everything: "We did the other one." The other one was Tupac. That proffer session produced the confession that prosecutors played for a Las Vegas jury three decades later. On August 31, 2026, that jury convicted Davis of first-degree murder in under three hours.
The investigation that cracked Tupac's case was never designed for Tupac's case. It was built to find Biggie's killer. It found Tupac's instead — and then the LAPD shut it down. Twenty-seven years after Tupac Shakur was shot on the Las Vegas Strip, a jury finally answered who pulled the case together — and it took them roughly three hours to convict Duane “Keffe D” Davis of first-degree murder. The case wasn't built on forensics. No weapon was ever recovered. No Cadillac was found. There were no phone records, no surveillance. Prosecutors built their entire case on Davis's own mouth: a 2008 federal proffer, a 2009 police interview, a 2017 documentary, and a 2019 memoir he promoted as the unfiltered truth. His defense spent nearly two hours in closing arguments trying to convince the jury that every one of those statements — made to police, to a film crew, to his own publisher, across eighteen years — was fabricated. The jury didn't buy it. Davis now faces life in prison at his October sentencing, has already told the court he plans to appeal, and asked for his phone and laptop back on his way out. But Davis's words didn't just convict him. Since 2008, he's used those same platforms to name Sean “Diddy” Combs in Shakur's murder, alleging a million-dollar payoff for the hit, routed through a Harlem contact named Eric “Zip” Martin. Combs has denied any involvement, and Las Vegas police have stated he's never been a suspect. Martin died in 2012. Orlando Anderson was killed in 1998. The other two men allegedly in that white Cadillac died in 2004 and 2015. Every independent voice that could confirm or dismantle Davis's version of events is gone — which means what happens to the Diddy allegation now rests entirely on how much credibility a convicted killer has left.

Keffe D told LAPD investigators in 2008 that Sean "Diddy" Combs offered him a million dollars for the killing of Tupac Shakur. He placed the alleged conversation at Greenblatt's Deli in Los Angeles and said the payment was supposed to come through an intermediary named Eric "Zip" Martin. Combs has denied any involvement for thirty years. Law enforcement has stated he has never been a suspect. The jury in Keffe D's murder trial heard portions of the 2008 recording and testimony from the detective who conducted it. The allegation has lived in court documents, a Netflix documentary, and a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Tupac's family. What it has never had is corroboration — independent evidence that exists outside the mouth of the man making the accusation. Martin is dead. The alleged triggerman is dead. The two other men in the Cadillac are dead. No payment records, no surveillance, no weapon has been recovered. Davis alone remains, and he now claims everything he said was fiction.

The Keffe D murder trial just handed the jury its last piece of evidence — Duane Davis's own voice on a jail phone. This recap merges Wednesday's and Thursday's testimony into one look at how the prosecution built to that final moment in the case surrounding Tupac Shakur's murder. 
The stretch opened with retired Compton gang detective Robert Ladd, who spent years working the department's gang unit and tracking the South Side Compton Crips closely enough to name the exact rank Davis held inside the gang — a rank that decides who gives the orders and who follows them. Tupac's childhood friend Malcolm Greenidge testified next about where the shots came from that night, and about everything Tupac had lined up before he died: a label, a new album, a meeting already scheduled with Quincy Jones. Crime scene analysts then laid out what a 2023 search of Davis's Henderson home turned up, including his own book and newspaper clippings about the murder that had apparently been sitting in that house for decades. 
Then came the close: twenty-five witnesses, eight days, and a set of jail calls that did the heaviest lifting. Davis complaining his own words were being used against him. Davis on YouTube, pitching his book as "the real truth." And a call where the way Davis talked about Tupac points straight at motive — the same motive prosecutors have been building toward since opening statements. 
The defense goes next, starting with a detective and two police officers. Closing arguments are set for Monday, and Davis has an overnight decision ahead of him — testify, or don't.
