The Hidden Crisis in Veterinary Medicine: Burnout, Costs & Compassion

    01/10/2026 | 40 min
Why do pets matter, and what happens when the people dedicated to caring for them are struggling?

In this episode of Why Do Pets Matter?, Deborah Hamilton sits down with Dr. Gershon Alaluf, a retired veterinarian, practicing relief vet, podcaster, and researcher studying burnout in veterinary medicine. Together, they explore the growing pressures facing veterinarians, from the rising cost of care and emotional exhaustion to inadequate mentorship, difficult client conversations, and the challenges of maintaining trust in an increasingly complex industry.

They also discuss how pet owners can become more informed partners in their animals' care, why tools like ChatGPT can help prepare clients for veterinary visits, the role of pet insurance in managing unexpected expenses, and how better communication and collaboration can benefit everyone involved.

At the heart of this conversation is a shared concern: How can we protect the human-animal bond while making veterinary medicine more sustainable for the people who care for our pets?

Whether you're a pet owner, veterinary professional, or animal advocate, this is an honest and insightful conversation about compassion, connection, and the future of animal care.

    Extended Info
Guest: Dr. Gershon Alaluf, DVM, MBA, DBA Candidate
Host: Debra Hamilton | Hamilton Law & Mediation – HADR-NC

What does your veterinarian actually go through before, during, and after your pet's appointment? On this episode of Why Do Pets Matter?, host Debra Hamilton sits down with Dr. Gershon Alaluf, retired veterinarian, podcaster, DBA candidate, and fierce advocate for the human-animal bond, to pull back the curtain on what is really happening inside the veterinary profession.

Gershon grew up as an only child whose closest companions were animals. That bond shaped him into a veterinarian who sees his work not as a transaction, but as a sacred relationship between a family and the pet that holds that family together. Today, from his podcast Irreplaceable Truths and his weekly LinkedIn newsletter Veterinary Intelligence, he continues championing the profession he loves, even as that profession faces a quiet crisis.

In this conversation, Debra and Gershon explore:
    • The $2–4 billion annual cost of veterinary burnout, and how moral injury makes it worse
    • Why "hybrid vigor" in doodle breeds is often misunderstood, and what genetic testing really tells us
    • How corporate consolidation is reshaping mentorship and loyalty in veterinary practice
    • The communication skills veterinarians desperately need — and rarely receive in school
    • The role of pet insurance in reducing financial conflict between vets and pet owners
    • Why mediation — not litigation — may be the answer when the human-animal bond is at stake

Whether you are a pet owner, a veterinary professional, or simply someone who has ever looked into an animal's eyes and felt something profound — this episode is for you.

Hope vs. Certainty: Why Pet Disputes Don't Belong in Court

    17/09/2026 | 37 min
From Courtroom to Conversation: What Mediation Gives Pet Owners That Judges Cannot /When Conflict Meets Compassion: Mediation, Pets, and the Power of Being Heard When Your Pet Is in the Middle: Mediation, Conflict, and the Bond That Changes Everything
Pets are crucial for our development as people. They teach us compassion, caregiving, and responsibility. They make us want to build better lives—for them and for ourselves. They teach us about companionship and what it truly means to be a good steward. That belief sits at the heart of this conversation.
In this episode of Why Do Pets Matter?, host Debra Hamilton sits down with Clarice Parsons, JD, Program Manager and mediator at MWI (Mediation Works, Inc.), to explore what happens when the legal system meets the human-animal bond. The result is a wide-ranging, deeply practical, and surprisingly personal conversation about how mediation can do things that courts simply cannot — and why that matters for every pet owner, veterinarian, breeder, and neighbor who has ever found themselves in conflict over an animal they love.
Much of the conversation centers on a distinction Debra returns to often in her practice: the difference between hope and certainty. Litigation gives you certainty, but only within the narrow boundaries of what the law allows. Mediation offers hope — a far wider range of possible outcomes, shaped entirely by what the parties themselves actually need. Nowhere is this clearer than in pet custody disputes, where a judge typically awards ownership to whoever paid for the animal. That's a property analysis — efficient, but emotionally hollow, and often harmful to the pet. A mediator can help parties craft a custom agreement that reflects the animal's routines, the children's attachment, and a plan for future veterinary decisions. No court order reaches that far.

The intersection of animal welfare and human relationships

    09/05/2026 | 40 min
The legal landscape is shifting. Animals are no longer simply property, they're something closer to sentient beings whose welfare demands serious legal consideration.

In this episode of "Why Do Pets Matter?", I speak with Mark Momjian, a family law attorney who's been at the forefront of integrating animal law into family law practice and legal education. Mark teaches at Villanova Law School, serves on Pennsylvania's domestic relations advisory council, and has pioneered animal-assisted therapy in the classroom.

Our conversation explores the intersection of animal welfare and human relationships, from the challenges of pet custody litigation to the role of companion animals in domestic violence situations.

Listen to learn why animal law isn't just a niche specialty—it's essential to understanding the full scope of family dynamics and social justice.

    Ask Mambo

    24/04/2026 | 32 min
In this engaging episode of Why Do Pets Matter?, Debra Hamilton welcomed Anthony Cospito and Arlu Gomez, the founders of Ask Mambo, an AI-powered assistant designed specifically for dog owners. Born from their personal journey with their beloved dog Mambo, whose health challenges inspired them to create a resource they wished had existed, Anthony and Arlu shared how their platform is transforming the way pet owners connect with, understand, and care for their dogs.

Ask Mambo, which launched in October 2025, uses a vast data set integrated through ChatGPT, enriched by user-submitted information, to deliver personalized advice on diet, training, health, and behavior. With over 45 breeds currently serviced and a growing user base, the platform is free and accessible at askmambo.com. The conversation covered the emotional power of pets, the practical applications of AI in pet care, and the exciting road ahead for Ask Mambo as it expands its community and partnerships.

3 Key Highlights from Our Conversation
    1. AI That Truly Knows Your Pet
Ask Mambo goes beyond generic advice by learning each individual pet's profile. Owners can upload vet reports, food labels, and health history so the AI becomes increasingly personalized over time. Anthony explained that the platform bridges the gap between vet visits, giving owners reliable, fact-based guidance exactly when they need it, day or night.

    2. Preparing Pet Owners for Better Vet Visits
One of the most powerful features Debra and her guests discussed is Ask Mambo's ability to help owners prepare for veterinary appointments. The platform suggests non-confrontational phrasing for questions and allows owners to send organized notes and backstory to their vet ahead of time, improving communication, reducing anxiety, and ultimately leading to better outcomes for pets.

    3. Compassionate Support Through Pet Loss
Arlu shared a deeply personal account of how Ask Mambo helped them cope with Mambo's passing, offering emotional reassurance and practical guidance through grief. This dimension of the platform reflects the founders' deep understanding that the human-animal bond doesn't end at the last vet visit, and that pet owners deserve support through every stage of that journey.
